More changes at Roseangle
This is the first Newsletter since the death of our immediate past President, John Berridge. John was such a fighter it is hard to believe he's gone. We all have our memories of him and his years of dedicated work to make Dundee Art Society what it is today; a strong vibrant organisation, encouraging and teaching the enjoyment of art.
We owe him a debt of gratitude. It was with his encouragement that I became involved with Dundee Art Society and now find myself elected your President. No-one can fill another person's shoes, and I don't intend to try. However I do intend to do my best for the Society in this special position. It is an honour for me to call myself your President.
Tribute to John Berridge by Derrick Moore
This summer saw the sad loss of John who took ill while on holiday in Spain. John had a long association with Dundee Art Society. He served on Council, as Secretary and ultimately as President for twelve years. In his time as President, John presided over a transformation, art classes were re - introduced building up to a very successful programme of workshops from which many of our members have gained so much. John always insisted that they should be of quality and affordable.
He had a passion for art which he wanted to share and took every opportunity to get people involved with the Society. He built links with other Societies within Tayside and Fife leading to an Open Exhibition. He was very keen to involve Students from Duncan of Jordonstone to exhibit and as some gained experience in their work he had them return to give demonstrations and talks on a Friday evening.
John was an art Critic for the Courier. He always tried to give encouragement to artists by giving them a mention in his review of the Art Society Exhibition. He was often called upon to review exhibitions of local artists.
John was instrumental in persuading Council to set up a web page for the Society, perhaps a little ahead of his time, but as a result the Society now has a prominent position within the art field in Scotland.
Last year, John fulfilled a long held dream that the Society would hold a painting Holiday.
By all accounts this proved to be very successful.
Over the last few years John struggled with the progressive disability of M.S. but he never complained; his determination to carry on was inspiring. John enjoyed a challenge. He had the ability to produce a good picture whether in watercolour, acrylic or oil.
Our sympathy and best wishes go to Margaret, Jonathan and Tim.
There have been various forms of contact with the Society. Interestingly the website produces most first point of contact email enquiries and phone calls. These were very diverse from holiday offers to invites to display outdoors in November. Phone calls came in regarding artists both past and present members and non members of the Society. Requests for help were received for historical information and poster displays. Ongoing contact was detailed with the newly launched Westfest. Thanks to the continued efforts of Derrick Moore, details of the current membership to 1 st June 2010 stand at 246, all of whom are paid up Members. This includes 3 new members and 9 Honorary Members.
Society Membership starts again on 1st September 2010.
At the AGM it was agreed that the following be updated - £12 Full Time Student, £25 Adult, £35 Family (£17.50 each with any children free providing all were residing at the same address). As most members are now aware I took over the role of Treasurer in April 2009 and this has been my first full year. I am most grateful to the previous Treasurer, Sandy Scott, for his help and encouragement during the take-over period. The accounts were presented at the AGM in June and some of the main features for our financial year March 31 2009 to April 2010 are outlined below. The main expenses are gas, electricity, insurance and maintenance. These account for a large proportion of income. The main sources of income are subscriptions and hire of the gallery space, and these are by far the largest contributors. There is enough left over to support the lectures, demonstrations, classes, exhibitions and some publicity, but very little else. An increase in subscriptions starting this year will make things a little easier, but will do little to address the substantial updating required for many aspects of the gallery. There is a long list including new chairs and tables, new picture hanging equipment, new boiler and control system, disabled access and much besides. Advice and help from members with skills in attracting sponsors and applying for grants would be appreciated.

April 2009 – March 2010. The Civic Trust met once a month from October to April, the Dundee Philatelists met twice a month from September to May both on Thursday evenings. A life class was held on Monday evenings with John Berridge’s class on Tuesday evenings and Harry McGregor’s class on Wednesday evenings. Jo McIntyre had a retirement party in the summer, the Friends of Scottish Opera had two social evenings during the winter months and Paola McClure had a family party just after Christmas 2009. Val Shuff used the Gallery to photograph models for her portraiture. A youth group ‘Pure Media UK’ hired the Gallery for a series of workshops and a book promotion in which children from 8 – 12 years took part in film making, drama and crafts. 4 th year students from Duncan of Jordanstone had an exhibition to raise funds for their Degree Show catalogue. More recently two young Artists in Residence had an exhibition of jewelry and this has kept up connections with the Art College. There was a Monday lunchtime Pilates class which ran for most of the year until they obtained their won premises. Dundee Art Society’s late President, Neil Maclean, established a connection with Tayside Celiac Society and they have had their AGM here at the Gallery after a long absence.
Programme Organiser – Fiona Haldane
Firstly, as the Programme Organiser, I would like to thank all of our members who came alone to the monthly Friday meetings and gave such great support to those artists who gave of their time to demonstrate their individual talents and talk with enthusiasm about artists of times gone by.
This new season has a super variety of artists and topics which I hope even more of you come to listen to and watch. The programme follows, keep it safe so you don’t miss any of this year’s artists!! Doors open at 7:00pm and the meetings start at 7:30pm until 9:30pm.
