ALL CHANGE AT ROSEANGLE

"Faunal Renewal,” as you may know, is a biological term describing the replacement of an established group of animals by a successor group. Well, fellow art lovers, you will see that this also happens to art societies!

At last, after as long as many of us can remember, the leading officers of our society, headed by our indefatigable president, John Berridge and our tireless treasurer, Sandy Scott and dedicated exhibitions convenor, John Davie (who ran a tight ship in producing and organising our exhibitions), have done what they've been saying for years it was high time to do. They've put down their seals of office to take up pen and paint brush. A word of thanks here also to Andrew Sneddon, who is retiring after three years as maintenance officer. During that period he adopted a very "hands-on" approach to a variety of tasks, thus saving the society an appreciable amount in labour charges.

Not many of us remember anyone else leading the society except, perhaps, Neil Mclean and Ken Constable, who were so sadly lost to us. Unfortunately, very few of us have had the opportunity to see the amount of work our officers have put in behind the scenes to make the society function. When the right kinds of officers are in place, things just seem to happen as if ordained by a higher power; any clouds on the horizon are kept in check by a hard-working council.

Well here we are at a time for change, or should I say, a step forward. We surely have every reason to believe that the society can prosper with new leadership and new ideas. As we have already seen, Ruth Walker slipped seamlessly into the position of exhibitions convenor and the treasurer's post is passing into the capable hands of Brian Eddy, so we can be confident that suitable candidates will soon emerge to occupy the chairs of president and vice-president. You may not at once think of yourself as that person, but who knows? Some are born great and others have greatness thrust upon them ( to paraphrase Shakespeare ) and everyone who has taken part in running our society has, to the best of my knowledge, found it to be a rewarding experience, and really good fun. The new structure of the council allows one to become involved gradually, finding out what goes on before "getting in at the deep end.”

So there we are. We all join in thanking the past officers and council, particularly John and Sandy, for their many years of service and we wish them many more years of participation in the activities they probably had in mind when they joined the society.

YOUR SOCIETY NEEDS YOU

President and Vice-President Vacancies

The executive seeks nominations for these two positions which will be held for a period of two years. Thereafter the vice-president will assume the presidency and a new vice-president will be elected. The holders need not be artists, but they should enjoy and be interested in all types of art.

Maintenance Officer

It is desirable that that the holder of this position should possess some knowledge of the building trades and some handyman skills in order to deal with the inevitable - but mostly minor - maintenance tasks which arise from time to time.

We are confident that, within a membership of over 250, there will be no shortage of persons capable of serving in these positions with distinction. Council members, whose contact numbers are on the membership cards, will be pleased to receive nominations as early as possible. It is essential that before submitting any name, the nominee's consent is first obtained.

Do consider offering your services and help take Dundee Art Society into the future.

THE SOCIETY'S PROGRAMME HAS A NEW LOOK

Firstly, thanks to all those who took the time to complete and return the questionnaire regarding the number of exhibitions and Friday night meetings. We have taken account of the various comments in compiling the programme for 2009-2010.

Exhibitions

We have decided to reduce the number of exhibitions from 4 to 3 a year and the first of these will be held from 6th to 15th November. We consider that this gives sufficient time before Christmas, but is still close enough to tempt those well-organised people who have started their shopping early and, of course, in addition to the actual paintings there will be the usual range of excellent crafts, cards and prints all providing ideas for Christmas gifts.

The second one will take place in the Spring from 5th to 14th March 2010, providing an incentive to resume our endeavours with pencil, pen and brush after the long winter nights.

Finally, the usual early Summer exhibition will run from 28th May to 6th June which takes us neatly to the close of our year and our A.G.M. on 4th June.

Our new exhibition convenor, Ruth Walker, did an admirable job in setting up the last three exhibitions thus ensuring that the number of visitors and level of sales have remained fairly constant even during these difficult times. We hope that by concentrating our efforts on three exhibitions, a modest increase in visitor numbers and sales is achievable.

Last season’s prize winners were as follows:

Harry Vaughan Trophy 2008: Gina Wright

Commended: Harry McGregor, Maggie Ferrier

James Morrison Trophy 2009: Kathleen Stewart

Highly Commended: John Berridge, Edna Gray, Gesina Tait and Tony Tooke

Jean Craig Trophy 2008: John Stoa

Highly Commended: Gina Wright

Commended: Karolina Gibson

Best Paintings in Exhibitions 2008-09:

Autumn: John Davie and Gina Wright

Spring: Lynda Marshall

Summer: Ruth Walker

Very well done and congratulations to all our winners. Keep up the creativity and hard work and here’s to next season’s winners!

FRIDAY EVENING MEETINGS

The council would like to thank all those who turned out in fair weather and foul, in sunshine and snow, to attend the talks and demonstrations on Friday evenings.

Unfortunately, numbers have been dropping off a little and replies in the questionnaire give various reasons for this. The ever present problem of parking in Roseangle is a major factor, but other reasons taken on board were members' other commitments on Friday nights ; for some, venturing out on dark winter nights is off-putting.

So with those members' thoughts in mind, we are reducing the number of meetings to only one a month to be held whenever possible, on the third Friday. We hope this will encourage more of you to come and enjoy the wide array of subjects on offer in this very important part of the society's programme.

Although it is said that you cannot please all the people all the time, the programme this season will try - with a variety of talks, demonstrations, film shows and crits - to do exactly that. There should be something for everyone.

Programme Dates and Speakers

September 18th We have with us on our opening evening a fantastic, professional, wildlife artist who has recently made his dream come true and moved to Scotland. He is combining a demonstration and talk and will be delighted to help any member who cares to bring along a wildlife piece which is, perhaps, causing an artistic dilemma! What a full an excellent start to our year. His name is Colin Woolf and you can visit his website on www.wildart.co.uk or on colin@wildart.co.uk for a taste of his talent.

October 23rd Mr Chris Brickley of Bonhams in Edinburgh is giving a talk with slides about Arthur Melville who was on the fringes of "The Glasgow Boys". He was an important influence on them and on the impressionist movement itself.

November 20th On this winter's night we have organised a film show from Toucan Films who do all their work for charity. We have had them before and members have enjoyed the various topics in their short films. This evening the main film will be about Barbara Robertson, a professional artist dealing in litho prints. Last year she had an exhibition with Eduardo Alessandro's Gallery in Broughty Ferry which proved to be a great success. Other films will include bronze casting. Come, sit back and enjoy.

December 11th On our last evening before Christmas, our popular Eleanor Nicoll will share with us her vast knowledge and enjoyment of Mexican Art. She will delight us with the details of Christmas celebrations in Mexico and explain how this hot and colourful country mixes indigenous and European traditions.

January 15th Welcome to 2010. The New Year's opening speaker is art gallery owner, Julian Jardine, from Perth. He will be demonstrating his particular field of beautiful ceramics and discussing artists and galleries. Let's turn out and get the New Year off to a flying start!

February 19th This will prove to be a very new and informative type of talk.

Dr Stewart Roxburgh is giving a power point presentation on ‘The Eye in Art’.

He will discuss how the eye and its defects may have aided great artists such as Monet in his impressionist work. Come and learn how our eyes function, and how this affects our own art, AMAZING!!

March 19th Marriane Rizza is a new speaker at the Society. She works with 3-dimensional art, creating small and fascinating pieces. She will show us how to make 3D art from a selection of materials we may have at home. Small is beautiful.

April 16th A welcome return of our ‘crit’ night with Dorothy Alexander. Bring along your work and she will discuss it and give you a professional ‘crit’, in time for our summer exhibition. (Handing-in date 22 nd May).

May 21st Our last evening for the season is a demonstration from pet painter Julie Valentine. She will concentrate on how you should approach pet portrait commissions. Many members are often asked to paint animals for friends and this advice could be a great help in the process.

June 4th A.G.M.

WORKSHOPS

I hope you have all had a good summer and are ready to get back to the drawing board! The membership who attended the workshops over the years have been great with feedback into art styles they found enjoyable and this allows the society to provide a few, very specialised classes with expert teachers, as well as the familiar workshops in oils, pastels and watercolours.

September Back by popular demand is Nicola Martin who produces glorious charcoal drawings which sell in galleries all over Scotland. Do visit her website www.artmajeur.com/njm13 .

October Eddie Lange is returning to give two classes in watercolour, a wonderful medium which needs practice. Having such an expert to help with its wonders is always a delight.

November Another Masterclass in oils with Dr James Morrison, who is one of the major landscape artists in Scotland. We are very lucky to have him with us again.

December We have a super new Printmaking Workshop with two experts, Andrew Abernethy and Peter Leaworth. They are bringing a printing press, equipment and materials to the gallery from the art college, which will enable us to prepare and produce etchings. What a great gift for Christmas, to make your very own print for that someone special.

January This is a new workshop on the use of ‘Gesso’ and is being given by Douglas Mathew, who you may have seen when he gave a wonderful demonstration last season, at one of our Friday evenings sessions. The way he works with this gem of a medium is very exciting, as a base on his canvas before using oils or acrylics.

February Another new workshop will be taken by Joe Alcorn. The topic is ‘taking the fear out of drawing’, incorporating innovative and exciting ways to express yourself.

March Our specialist class in acrylics will be with Ian Scott who will encourage and inspire the use of this versatile medium which, with a little help and practice, can be used to great effect.

April We have been lucky to benefit from the expertise of a gold medallist botanic artist. Many members delight in drawing and painting flowers in all mediums and this will be a great opportunity to meet and learn from Claire Dalby. For full workshop details and dates see pages 8 and 9 below.

Gallery Hire

The gallery is doing very well regarding hiring out to a wide variety of organisations. We have regular, constant supporters including the Civic Trust, the Embroiders Guild and the Philatelists. In addition there is the evening use of the gallery with life drawing classes on Mondays, an art class with John Berridge on Tuesdays and Harry McGregor’s class on Wednesdays.

We have also had the gallery used for special functions such as birthdays, anniversaries and even a wedding buffet. So bearing such events in mind, please, as members, take the opportunity to book a venue at special rates. The gallery may prove to be the perfect space for an exhibition or birthday celebration.  Website Update

www.dundeeartsociety.co.uk

Our website is growing, with more and more members using it to keep up-to-date with what’s on throughout the year and to view art work by our very own artists. It can be used to advertise any private or public exhibitions members may be organising or taking part in. You can download entry forms for such exhibitions as well as membership application forms. The site is also getting hits from many outside people and this keeps us in contact with others throughout the vast art world. Any changes to the programme will be posted on the website as soon as possible, in a situation where a speaker or workshop is cancelled for example. All members can display their work free of charge on the website. For full details e-mail

Brand New Designed Membership Card

The Society has produced a new smaller membership card which can be folded in three and popped into a purse or wallet so that, when shopping in places that give us a discount, it will be easy to carry it with you. It also lists the Friday night speakers and topics, contact numbers of office bearers and exhibition dates throughout the coming season.

As you will note The Eduardo Alessandro Studio and Gallery in Gray Street, Broughty Ferry, Dundee, is giving all members a 20% discount on framing. They have one of the largest selections of mouldings, card mounts and types of glass available in the area and can offer plenty of advice on what’s on offer and at what price. On their ground floor they have framed prints, allowing you to see at first hand styles of framing, whilst upstairs you can see original works and how they are framed, often on a very large scale.

Throughout the year they show many professional artists in combined and solo shows, another great way to see all mediums being used by experts from all over Scotland and abroad.

We also get 15% from out local art supplier Burns and Harris who also have a shop in Kirkcaldy. Throughout the year they will have special offers on such things as brushes and canvases. For any of you who like to make up your own canvases they do stretchers and primed and un-primed canvas by the yard.

One of their latest services is a fantastic Printing Service. The amazing new full colour machines can take an image on disc and print it onto a vast array of quality photographic papers or on actual watercolour paper. Actual numbers of prints range from one individual print to hundreds. They can also produce an image on canvas. Throughout the shop there are examples of all the options available, for full details of this new and exciting way of expanding your original work, go in and ask for Brian, who will detail each procedure and discuss options with you for a perfect print.

And finally – from all the council members we hope you enjoy the forthcoming year with Dundee Art Society and get involved with the many activities on offer. Once again thank you to all those who came to our meetings, workshops and exhibitions, and we look forward to meeting many more of you in the future.
