Colin Ian Christie BA

I studied at Edinburgh College of Art and Glasgow School of Art and
spent the latter half of my career as a lecturer at Edinburgh Napier
University (College that was). Since 2001 I have been out on my own
doing all manner of commercial graphic/ illustration, turning to
painting and exhibiting more recently. For the last couple of years I
have also delivered Drawing and Painting courses on behalf of Edinburgh
Napier University as part of their Independent Learning programme. I
have also been doing many very successful 2 day workshops at Pitlochry
Festival Theatre. The workshops at Birnam Arts Centre are an attempt to
build on the small but faithful following I have built up and have the
use of a purpose built studio backed up with excellent food and great
local beauty spots - which I hope we can get out and paint in the near
future.

Dates
The Portrait You'd Love To Paint  - 24th July and 28th August
Degas - Pastels and Paint - 31st July and 2nd October
Watercolours with Impact - 25th September

OTHER DATES TO BE ARRANGED SHORTLY

Location
Birnam Arts Centre, Station Road, Birnam, Nr. Dunkeld PH8 0DS

The Portrait You'd Love To Paint
Successful portraiture is not as difficult as you might believe. This
one day intensive workshop will help you discover how just a few basic
methods can get great results. The workshop is planned in a series of
steps from the initial sketch, creating the vital underpainting, to
capturing a likeness and finishing with flourish and flair. The media
for this workshop are acrylics and oils.

Watercolours with Impact
Watercolour painting in the manner of Arthur Melville (Glasgow Boy)
A full 1 day workshop covering all the techniques required to create
large watercolour paintings with full range of tones, colour depth and
visual impact. A great opportunity to gain real confidence in
watercolour painting.

Degas - Pastels and Paint
Cross learning has always intrigued me - how gaining a skill in one
area seems to spill across into another. This 1 day workshop is an
opportunity to explore the works of Degas in both media. You will
quickly discover how work in one medium informs the other, the
application of media, your sense of colour and design. You will be
amazed how much your own pastels or paintings can improve.

Guidance Notes
The aim of these workshops is to offer intensive tuition backed up with
a good studio space and proper materials and equipment. The numbers are
limited to eight to allow an extremely high level of tuition and the
workshop is open to all levels. The minimum number is six, so if we
don't have six sign-ups then the workshop will not run.

Lunch and refreshments are included in the price, as is collection from
Dunkeld Station if you are traveling by train.

All materials, equipment and sources are supplied. I always do this to
ensure that everyone has the very best opportunity to create worthwhile
results and are not hindered by inappropriate paints or equipment and
everyone who has taken part part in my workshops really appreciates
this aspect. So, only bring yourself and an easel if that's your
preferred way of working.

Start 9.30 for 10am
Finish 4.30pm

Cost and payment
The cost per workshop is £55 all inclusive and payment is on the day.
"No shows" will still have to pay but will be offered a place on a
future workshop at no further cost.

To Book
Call or email and let me have the course and date you want, your name
and contact number/email. Please do not book on the off chance you will
be able to make it. That only blocks the very limited number of places.

Dear Members,

I have been checking out a site which seems to good to be true, which was brought to my notice by Liz Kay. The chap who runs it is offering a site which lists all Scottish Artists and Galleries, which artists can simply join if they live in Scotland. There is no charge; I was skeptical at first, but have been in email correspondence with Webmaster and consider it is OK. Instructions about joining are on the website - www.scotlandsartists.com

Best Wishes
John
